Recently, the membership of e-pec.info had the unique opportunity of participating in a Question and Answer session with Marco Behrmann, Chief Information Officer at MindArk. What follows is the transcript of that discussion.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

e-pec.info: How are things in the land of MindArk and Entropia Universe?

Marco|MindArk: It is coming along nicely, thank you. Entropia is growing and is being recognized by more and more people and media, which is nice. We get media interviews and requests for conferences and as keynote speakers all the time nowadays.

e-pec.info: With your new position of Chief Information Officer, what are your primary responsibilities and how do you envision your role with the Entropia Universe Community changing, if at all?

Marco|MindArk: I have a supervising role as to what information is supplied to all external parties, like the media, PR, press releases, websites, forums, community feedback, etc. My main area is still in the community though, as I like the feedback and sense of belonging it brings, also the frustration and frenzy sometimes. It is like the real world in many senses, and I am much happier about there being passion rather than apathy. One thing that is very important to understand is that Entropia is like a journey. Some people will stay for the entire duration, some make a guest appearance and than fade out, all this creates a truly vibrant sensation few people outside the community can understand.

Today we are four or five people handling the external communication, not including our CEO and MindArk's founder Jan Welter Timkrans, and those are; Carl Uggla, CMO, David Simmonds, Business Development Manager, Hans Lundholm, AD and Frank Campbell, writer and events. So now, instead of doing all those jobs myself, I get more time to focus on the things I like to focus on – the community and relaying information and feedback to and from it and MindArk.

e-pec.info: What areas do you believe Entropia Universe needs to strengthen in order to compete with games such as Second Life, which also utilize a real world economy?

Marco|MindArk: Second Life is a great system and will attract a lot of people, but their (Linden Lab) vision is not ours. We will continue to enhance the elements that make Entropia Universe what it is and make those the best there is. Our vision is clear and has a very long-term commitment. Basically, we will stick to our plan. It would be a huge mistake to imitate others, as you will always end up being behind. We will add more activities, deepen the ones already in place and add more of an in world sense of history, celebrity, and being part of a new world. I would not be surprised if Omegaton, Genesis and Chikara become more active in their roles, as counterparts of the massive Imperial government. ,-)

e-pec.info: Is there any concern about speculation and the volatility of some markets within game?

Marco|MindArk: The market will always rise and fall and rise again. What is important to understand is that we need an economy that caters to every level in Entropia Universe. From the participants with a budget of a few PED's, to those with millions of PED's on their PED Cards. We also need to address some imbalances in the economy, like the lack of a BLP and Plasma Opalo counterpart. The mining system needs ways to expand the amount of ore and EnMatters available over time, the crafting system needs more options – maybe add-ons that reduce the time per attempt and the ability to automate some manufacturing. We have a lot of exciting ideas (actually, we have an Idea-file which has several thousand entries). Taming, Mindforce and Beauty need attention. New backbone systems in Entropia Universe like the new physics engine will go live shortly, which enables us to add vehicles. Who will own the first auto manufacturing plant? ,-).

e-pec.info: Many have been very excited about a certain craftable armor line for a very, very long time! Can Necromancer, Litch and Reaper Blueprints be looted and have the designs been completed?

Marco|MindArk: Yes, they can. They are however, very hard to obtain. All items can be obtained in Entropia Universe, even Imp Mk.II's and Mod FAPs.

e-pec.info: After the introduction of some new professions (Taming, Land Management, Carpentry), should we expect to see additional professions within the coming year? If so, what lines?

Marco|MindArk: Industrialists and bankers. Maybe politicians, we have to see.

e-pec.info: Is there discussion on adding functionality that would enable players to develop and deliver teaching resources to fellow players (ie. the ability to record and replay video, the ability for the students/ lecturer to post chunks of text to a shared area, the ability to post PDF's, etc)? And how about unique items and/or artwork?

Marco|MindArk: We are investigating it. The problem with it is twofold; one is copyright and infringements. Entropia Universe cannot be used as a platform for illegal delivery of such materials. The other is the security and integrity of the system. Entropia Universe is built from the ground up to be as secure as possible. To open the system up to dynamically allow for additions is a great risk. But we embrace the idea, we are just examining how to do it right.

e-pec.info: Apart from the ideas of co-ownership and lending, has there been discussion on the possibility of temporary jobs within the space flight industry? For instance, the ability for a hangar owner to list one or more people as co-pilots who may fly and maintain the ship in addition to the deed owner? Any other flight related updates planned?

Marco|MindArk: It is an idea that is being discussed as well. The economy of Entropia is designed around the concept of one owner of items, meaning we need a workaround in the suggested case.

e-pec.info: Due to large numbers of new participants, Eudoria is very populated and many low-end hunting grounds are no longer sufficient to sustain the population. Will there be development of new area's, larger spawns and/or new creatures featuring low-end mobs in the coming year?

Marco|MindArk: Yes. As said before, we need to cater to all levels of participation.

e-pec.info: Are there any upcoming tradeshows and/or other major marketing avenues that MindArk anticipates partaking in the near future?

Marco|MindArk: We are attending the Games Convention 2006 in Leipzig, Germany (it is like the European E3), where we will introduce our newest payment solution, Paysafecard. We are presenting in China with the East India ship "Götheborg", together with companies like Volvo and Ericsson, and high-level politicians and Swedish royalty. We will also deliver a keynote for a couple of hundred VIPs. And we have some very interesting meetings afterwards. A few days ago we were in Holland, at a festival. Earlier we were in Los Angeles, and so on and so forth. Next year I foresee MindArk and Entropia Universe going on a big tour around the world.

e-pec.info: Finally, from a personal perspective, what is the one thing that you are most excited to see come to fruition in the coming months?

Marco|MindArk: I really like the concept behind the factories and the ability to actually employ other people to work for you. It is really cool. There is no ETA on it yet though.

e-pec.info: Thank you for taking the time to do this. We all appreciate it very much.

It's very nice to get some solid information after such a long deficit. Some of the comments make me very excited and I hope to see these things come to fruition. ESPECIALLY vehicles(although after joining 2nd life, my only wish now it to fly; so Marco plz add personal jetpacks!)

As for all the built up anger and frustration from the lack of communication... perhaps a Marco Effigy should be put in Twin that ppl can target and shoot and all the money spent on that can be donated to a charity :)

Very informative and revealing inteview. I'm off to buy a Sakura/Omegaton/Genesis.. and maybe some catering tools :P

:read: long question > short answers, short questions > long answers...

Thanks for the email and good luck to all!

Some real nuggets in there! Auto manufacturing, opalo equivalents, ability to loot uber items, etc... Very good information. locomotive.gif

Also, good to see the future looks busy as far as industry events and whatnot for MindArk.

Thank you for all of the information Marco!
RexDameon
Ditto Buzz auto manufactoring, BLP Opalo, and uber items including necromancer BP's being able to drop was very interesting. My favorite thing is what he says about the lending system that the economy is based on ONE owner. As we know EU is dynamic and i think is as complicated as i thought where things like impmk2's are droped in proportion of mabey active players or active users. So think if you could lown an item out that would mean that 2 owners and making it drop less.....

My only hope right now is that MA develop story line and the FUN elements (i.e like bot missiosn and such)

1st off...Great job getting this interview....outstanding.

There was actually some nice info there.

Now, I will say something slightly negative...but I don't want it to be too much so...after all Marco gave us a little gift here, which we don't often get...so I don't want to seem ungrateful.

But If there is ever a chance to chat with marco again, I would really like to know about the direction of the game...will it stay close to the casino model, or is it going to try to expand into other types of gameplay once they are able to profitably. It is just that sometimes I feel that all the new features are designed to just get people to gamble more...but nothing that really develops greater dynamics/ community/ intrigue/ storyline in the game. Even when he says IMKII is still lootable, the cynic in me says yes...1 in a billion chance...but they give us that line to keep us putting quarters in the machine. It is this issue, about the style and direction of the game I am most interested in.

But again, aside from this...Thanks Marco, and to the epec folks who arranged this. It is so nice when MA actually lets us have a little dialogue.
Kygon
very goof info BUT am I understanding that the Necromancer, Litch and Reaper Blueprints are as hard to loot as imk2 or mod fap lol
Pretender
weee, thanks for the info.

Well I will refrain from commenting too much negatively on what Marco said, but just about all of it is stuff that has already been mentioned here or there.

What is new to me, however, is that Marco is now CIO of MA. So this means his old excuses no longer fly and he is now personally responsible for the lack of communication? In that case, I can only hope for the community that he will be true to what he has said before and really makes work on improving it. Because if he doesn't, well... that would say a lot, wouldn't it.

Honestly, for the four years I have played this game I have never had any trouble communicating with Marco. He has always responded nicely to my inquiries. I think sometimes people may mistake posting questions on a forum as a form of communication. Honestly, I have never understood what this communication issue is between gaming companies and thier customers.

That aside, I think it is plain to see that, if approached in a professional and courtious way, MindArk are more than happy to communicate with anyone anytime.

Yea i've had the same experience. I've gotten an answer everytime from Marco. And MA has implemented like 8 out of 10 things i've suggested so far. The only things MA has not communicated on enough i think is the story line i would like more events and more plot and interesting things going on. Like WTF is with the Egg? The bots?" the argos? i loved those couple of weeks that there was daily updates. I wish that would keep up.

As to where we are going in EU and whats happeneing i think MA has told us as much as they can.
Aziphirael
Interesting stuff indeed and certainly things to keep an eye on. For me I'm quite intrigued by banking, especially in the context in EU and its RCE. Because in the past MA have suggested that a lending system was too complex, yet a banking system if you think about it does rely on some element of trust and potential loans ability to lend.

By all means bring it on as it would be very interesting to see how its developed.
Chainfire
Buzz, Rex, I don't mean communication as in personal communications. The three PM's or so that passed between him and me were responded to, and in a professional way too.

That is not what I mean, what I mean is lack of communication from MA to the community as a whole, as well as support cases and such. For example, the silence after the trapping ATH. You both probably disagree, but the way that was handled, IMHO, is a definite no-no; I'd even go as far as to say it was a shameful(!) non-display. The questions Rex posted at the end of his post also serve as good example of lack of communication - even something as simple as "we can't tell you about the Egg yet, but something is coming up, *wink*" would better it by a lot.

So what if things are posted on a forum like EF (I won't take e-pec as example since I don't know of Marco frequents here)! Some topics have such response, lengthy debates, etc, that actually request input on the matter from MA, and you know he reads those, if you look at the "who's online" section as much as I do. Yet there's no response.

Ofcourse, some topics, some conversations, I can understand no comment can be made on, because for example it would have to give away EU core dynamics and such, but some things are NOT better left unsaid.

What about support. Copy/pasted support answers? Half the time you get the image your case isn't even read. Sometimes it takes week to get any reply at all (and it pretty much sucks if it turns out to be a copy/pasted reply). There are examples of this all over EF (true enough, many people aren't very nice to MA personnel in their support cases either). As CIO, isn't Marco responsible for such things as well?

To tackle something completely different - stats! Where's the game stats? Why does there need to be a user-run wiki to list those things? IMHO that information should be freely available. There's more of that kind-of stuff.

Talking is silver, silence is gold. But not if you're CIO for a big company.

Again I'd like to point out that I have no 'personal issues' with Marco. I actually think he's a 'swell' guy, but liking the guy who's responsible has nothing at all to do with the issues he's responsible for.
Svetlana
Nice comments Marco.

For starters, I will remind everyone (and update those that are since new to E-PEC) that the questions we asked were generated by every member on E-PEC that cared to ask a question in a thread a few months back. So, if the answers were mundane it might be b/c we just asked mundane questions :D But really, I thought they were all quite good and well-rounded.

Azi, I agree that his response on banking is intriguing! That is huge news that the possibility of banking might crop up within the next year. I can only imagine the ramifications of that.

I also am awaiting the factory and employment aspects of game that Marco addresses. We'll see, but if that pans out soon I envision Hades to no longer be sleeper-town and a lot more ppl actually having something to do in game despite not having a large ped card. Depending on the system itself, technically anyone could seek employment and end the day with more peds. This would also require some sort of automated ped transfers which, imo, is long enough in the waiting. Akin to Second Life, the possibilty of temporary or long-term contracts with employers to do this or that which would garner you wages automatically would really bring a new amount of realism in EU while also providing ppl with a viable alternative to depositing.

So, I guess if I wanted answers to my questions....I should have been visiting e-pec more often than I have been....my bad.

As far as communication...what is the proper venue in which to speak with Marco, that you guys refer to? I have avoided sending PMs, as I have assumed that the man was much too busy to deal with them, and that simply would not have the time to answer them. We certainly know that anything that is 'fix' related he will not address, as that would be a support issue.

Do you think Marco would be open to the idea of a regular chat session? A chat room may have to be designed to allow only a select number of people to ask questions...to keep it managable...and if there was such a system...I think there should be weighting placed on senior players....but also an allowance made for others, selected randomly, or in a cue...just a thought.

Perhaps leaders of major societies (and some leadership for unsoced players) could ask questions, which had been compiled, and condensed, which had been subited to them in the previous month...just another thought.

Something like a regular meeting with Marco would go a huge way to helping the communities perceptions (or misperceptions) about communication.

I would also love it if Marco was able to give some more direct answers...and if there is a reason that he can not answer something...just tell us...'I can't answer that for reasons of: security, we have not decided yet, we don't want to promise something we may not finish soon, it would allow some to exploit the system, or (just plainly) We have not coded that part of the world yet.

I would like to think that MA could trust some of us with a little dirty laundry...many of us have a background in technology, and understand that things are not always perfect. Recognizing the errors or mistakes, a company has made goes a long way to building trust with others (in my opinion). True, such transparancy could be used to beat up on MA...but we beat up on them enough for always wearing the 'happy happy fun fun' face. Ultimately, the way they present themselves to the community is their choice. And it is possible that we in the commuity would not be mature enough to handle such honesty....and would just beat up on them more. But it sure would be nice if MA could try it out...see if we can be trusted.

I hope I am not sounding like I am complaining.... I just have a personality that always looks to how things can be changed for the better (I am a consultant irl).

I appreciate that Marco hears our suggestions...we have proof of that. And how many times has he suprised us in our threads...just to show he that he reads much much more than he answers.

I think it would be even more appreciated if MA engaged us not only at the suggestion level...but at the design and implimentation level (barring any info that would lead to an exploit or insider info). Those of us that play this game hours a day will have insights as to how things could, or should be done, that those who spend their time coding and not playing as much, would not have. I know that MA employees spend time playing EU...but with what mentality? They simply can't switch to the mind of a player like that. This is why the community is such a great resource, imho, which is rarely tapped by MA, except for suggestions.

And example of this is the reputation system which became the good, but not universally useful Event promoter reputtation system. Now, MA may have thought through that much more than we are aware of...they may not have found a way to design one that can't be slanted or exploited by scammers. It may be that the event system is a feasibility test of a future general reputation system...we don't know. It is these kinds of details that I think many of us would love to know, and like to be able to dialogue about...perhaps comming up with solutions that MA has not been able to think of.

It is not that MA does not have good design tallent. But if you recall the global chess match betwwn Kasparov and the world a few years back. Kasparov challenged thousands on the internet. those on the net, would debate, and discuss their chess moves. Individually, none of them were a match for Kasparov. But collectively, by comparing ideas and strategy, they were able to beat him. This shows that there is not only strength in numbers...but intelligence in numbers...creativity in numbers. I yearn for improvements in EU...and am discouraged that we can not play a more active role in its development.

With all that said..I must say, it is a real treat whenever we get to hear from Marco. And I am grateful that he has addressed some great questions. Some of us don't say 'thanks' enough...So 'Thanks' Marco.
King Buzzo
Great post Fade. Indeed I believe some fairly simple things could be done to help things in regards to the communication issue. The Blog on the MindArk website updated at least weekly. A chat session as you suggest, maybe monthly. Q&A Sessions like this one. An ingame presence.

There is alot that can be improved on this front for sure.

no no i do agree things like that and the hunter bot things should have some official communication. I think what i was refering to before was more of MA not saying whats comming new withing game. Like telling us more warrnings of what changes are happeneing.

I love your idea of a weekly Q&A with Marco. How neat might that be if MA chose a random sampling of players each week to ask a question. To be fair, I think ideally this ought to be in game. So, for instance, one would receive an email from MA telling them to log into game to view a pm. The said pm would contain the info on the Marco Q&A to which the player could contribute one unique question. MA would weed through these all to eliminate those that are a tad too hostile, contain too much profanity, etc, and get to the good stuff (sry Knuck! assassin.gif ).

I agree that MA needs better communication with regards to basic questions, and I rather fancy the idea of MA at least saying 'This is why we cannot discuss XYZ'.
Noggin
I was actually quite impressed with that Q&A, nice one for getting it!

It was the best Q&A session with MA I've seen for a good long while. Marco even gave a few useful information nuggets, which these days seems to be a lot less common.

I do share the same thoughts on it as many of you guys... I think if they wanted to, MA could share a lot more without affecting the economy, or anything else for that matter. Communication is the key to a successful business, and I think one of the key things MA face is that people are just losing confidence in them to do the best for their business.

Things move very quickly in this industry, so information is always a difficult thing to share effectively. Linden Labs seem to have changed their communication methods quite substantially over the past couple of months. I'm very interested to see how it turns out.

At one point (hopefully) I'll have to make a similar decision on how to inform my customer base of what's going on, yet let everyone have their say. It's definitely a very difficult subject, especially when your product gets over a certain size and popularity.

Interestngly enough Marco has mentioned doing a Q&A from questions on EF and after a bit of drama has agreed to answer these sets of questions:

Will be interesting to see what happens.

Yeah, it will be an interesting challenge. Some people will be surprised, some will be disappointed, some will be ecstatic. Like always. =)

I am working towards a more open climate generally. I feel, for the first time in a couple of years, that the opportunity has come to this - I have some help so I don't have to do everything at MA not including purely technical stuff. It will take some time to get it all as I want it. It also requires internal changes so the communication back and forth also applies to actual influence into MindArk as an entity. It always takes time and energy changing culture. But I will continue my quest. =)

Also, as to why I don't comment on "hot topics" - it is due to the fact that if I do it prematurely, and things don't come out the way I informed, I creates a lot of badwill and frustration, and talks about lying etc. The ever-changing bank fees on the Entropia ATM Card is a classic current example - the info I stated over on Entropiaforum was the current one on that day, then later, when I was on vacation, it was updated by our partner, without me knowing until after I came back a few weeks later.

I am very much aware of the current hot topics, and when/if I have a statement, it will be presented. Before that, I don't enter the fire.

Marco, I greatly appreciate the determination and effort that I've seen from you lately. From hanging around of the past couple years, I've seen many times where you've jumped back in with a flash of your presense only to fade back again. I realize that your job is very demanding and that we as the community are even more demanding(and take it out all our frustrations on you). I'm very glad to see this type of interaction again as the "House of commons" type chats that we had years ago :)
Thank you!

Very good point. Certainly we wouldn't want MA openly communicating with us things that were really nowhere close to happening, etc.

I am also happy to see you Marco in your new, expanded role with MA. Grats!
And aye, I think some sort of more casual interaction would be great, even if it didn't answer those challenging hot topics. Some sort of 'Town Square' approach would be great.
In any event, thanks for posting here Marco and again thanks for answering our q's snegurochka.gif

Great to hear from you Marco. It gives me a bit more confidence that things may change. Company culture is always going to be a difficult one to change, especially in small companies where the personalities at the top tends to get involved. But I hope that communication will become a top priority and its a good sign that you are starting to get more involved.

Marco was in twin again today answering questions. Very good initiative IMO.

I got out of him that next week their may be a VU.

Shopkeepers will be updated but no info on how.

That he was unsure whether there will be more Land Grab areas made available or if they will be sold from now on.

And that perhaps their will be a sale that will Trump CND in the future ;)
